- **Taiwan will hold local elections on November 28, 2026.**
- **Taiwan's local elections will take place on November 28, 2026.**

I'm going to vote. |
I'm going home to vote. |
I'm going to vote for someone. |
| Who won the election? |
He's currently leading. |
The votes are still being counted. |
Voter turnout is high. |
I'd rather keep my vote private. |

| vote | 動詞／名詞 | 投票；一票、選票 | vote；vote for someone；cast a vote |

### election：選舉

談一場選舉時，用 **an election** 或 **the election**；多場則用 **elections**。「台灣的選舉」可說 elections in Taiwan；若雙方已知道是哪一場，可用 the election in Taiwan。

**The election is getting a lot of attention.**

**Voters elected her mayor.**

**vote for someone ≠ elect someone。

**I voted for her, but she wasn't elected.**

- **I'm going to vote.**
- **She voted for that candidate.**
- **Every vote counts.**

| 連任 | be reelected | seek reelection＝尋求連任 |

| 市長選舉 | mayoral election / election for mayor |

- **She's running for mayor.**
- **He's a candidate in the legislative election.**
- **The candidates discussed local issues during the debate.**

**Several types of local officials are elected in the same round of elections.**

| cast a ballot | 投票 | 與 cast a vote 都是常見說法 |
| go to the polls | 去投票 | 不要逐字翻成「去民調」 |

- **I went to my local polling station to cast my ballot.**
- **Voters waited in line outside the polling station before it opened.**
- **The candidates want to win the support of the electorate.**

| run for office | 參選、競選公職 | run for mayor / president |
| rally | 造勢集會 | hold a campaign rally |
| campaign motorcade | 競選車隊、車隊掃街 | organize a campaign motorcade |
| debate | 辯論 | a televised debate＝電視辯論 |

Focus Taiwan 在 2026 年 10 月 4 日的報導中使用 **“campaign for their mayoral and city council candidates”**，描述為市長與市議員候選人助選；同篇也使用 **“the opening of the campaign headquarters”**，描述競選總部成立活動（[Focus Taiwan](https://focustaiwan.tw/politics/202610040012)）。

Taipei Times 在 2026 年 10 月 1 日的報導中使用 **“to stump in Taipei’s six electoral districts”**，描述到台北六個選區進行競選活動。

- **She is running for mayor of Kaohsiung.**
- **Volunteers canvassed for support at a local market.**
- **The two candidates will face each other in a televised debate.**
- **The candidate held a rally before Election Day.** 那位候選人在選舉日前舉辦造勢集會。

**I'm going home to vote.**

若想強調回到家鄉，可說 **I'm going back to my hometown to vote.**；但 hometown 指家鄉或成長的地方，不一定等於戶籍地。

**Are you going to vote?**

**Where is the polling station?**

問自己被分配的地點，可用 **Where is my assigned polling station?**；實際地點請查正式通知或官方資訊。

**I want to learn more about the candidates' policy proposals before I vote.**

**They're counting the votes.**

The votes are being counted.**

**The results haven't been announced yet.**

**She was elected mayor.**

She won the mayoral election.**

| --- | --- | --- |
| count the votes / vote counting | 開票、計票 | the vote count 可指計票或票數統計 |
| count ballots by hand | 人工開票 | by hand＝以人工方式 |
| be ahead / lead | 領先 | be ahead in the count＝在目前計票中領先 |
| vote share / share of the vote | 得票率 | won 40% of the vote＝獲得四成選票 |

> Close to 17,800 polling stations closed at 4 p.m. (0800 GMT) and counting, by hand, began shortly after.
>

**The latest polls show a close race.**

這裡的 polls 是民調；但 **go to the polls** 通常是「去投票」，不是「去做民調」。

**Voters are heading to the polls.**

**The candidate is leading in the polls.**

**The candidate is leading in the vote count.**

**Voter turnout was high.**

如果要講候選人的「得票率」，可用 **vote share** 或 **share of the vote**，不要用 turnout。

**What share of the vote did the candidate receive?**

Race

**It looks like a close race.**

### a close race 和 too close to call 有什麼不同？

**A close race** 描述選情接近；**too close to call** 表示接近到尚無法判斷勝負（[Merriam-Webster](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/too%20close%20to%20call)）。已分出勝負的選戰仍可稱 close race，但不再是 too close to call。

**The race was too close to call until late in the evening.**

### lose the election 和 concede defeat 有什麼不同？

**The losing candidate conceded defeat and congratulated her opponent.**

**With most ballots counted, the incumbent mayor is ahead by a narrow margin.**

**Most** 是「大部分」；若要說「開票過半」，把 most 換成 **more than half the**，即 With more than half the ballots counted。

### Talking About Elections in Taiwan

During an election campaign, people may talk about candidates, political parties, and policy proposals. Some voters focus on local issues, such as public transport and community services. Others compare the candidates' experience and plans.

On election day, voters go to polling stations to cast their votes. After voting ends, the ballots are counted. A candidate may lead during the count, but a lead is not the same as a final result.

When discussing an election with friends, you can share the issues you care about without asking anyone to reveal their vote. Listening respectfully can help keep the conversation friendly, even when you disagree.

- **Alex:** Are you doing anything this weekend?
- **Mia:** I'm going home to vote.
- **Alex:** What kind of election is it?
- **Mia:** It's a local election. I've been reading about the candidates' policy proposals.
- **Alex:** What issues matter most to you?
- **Mia:** Public transport and community services. How about you?
- **Alex:** Those matter to me, too. I also care about education.

- **I see your point, but I have a different view.**
- **What issues matter most to you?** 你最在意哪些議題？
- **I'd rather keep my vote private.**
- **I'd prefer not to discuss politics right now.** 我現在比較不想討論政治。

用 **I'd rather…** 或 **I'd prefer…**，能清楚表達偏好，不需要批評對方的立場。

**cast a ballot＝投票。
5. **lead ≠ win；a close race ≠ too close to call；lose ≠ concede defeat。**

I'm going home to ______.
She's running ______ mayor.
They're ______ the votes.
4. Voter turnout
She was ______ mayor.

**答案：**1. vote；2. for；3. counting；4.

- **I'm going home to vote.**
- **I want to learn more about the candidates.**
- **I care about public transport.**

用 vote for someone。例如 I voted for that candidate.

參選可用 run for + 職位，例如 run for mayor；當選可用 be elected + 職位，例如 be elected mayor。

中文「開票」在這裡指清點選票，英文通常用 count the votes、vote counting 或 ballot counting，不是逐字翻譯成 open the votes。

Voter turnout 是投票率；候選人的得票率可用 share of the vote。

I'd prefer not to discuss politics. I'd rather keep my vote private.
