Australia's Central Bank Raises Rates to an 18-Year High
On 3 November, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) raised its cash rate by 0.25 percentage points, from 4.60% to 4.85%. According to ABC News, it was the bank's fifth increase this year and took the rate to its highest level since 2008. The decision was not unanimous: six board members voted for the hike, while three wanted to keep the rate unchanged.
The RBA said inflation remains elevated and is broadly based, which means prices are rising across many parts of the economy. It pointed to higher fuel and other commodity prices linked to the conflict in the Middle East, as well as fast-rising prices for technology goods. The bank now expects inflation to stay above 3% for the coming year and not to reach the top of its 2–3% target range until late 2027.
For households, the hike means bigger mortgage bills. Macquarie was the first lender to pass on the 0.25 percentage point increase, effective 19 November. Canstar, a comparison site, estimated that someone with a $600,000 mortgage will now pay about $456 more each month than at the start of the year.
The decision also sparked a political debate. Treasurer Jim Chalmers said government budgets were not what was pushing inflation higher, while Opposition Leader Angus Taylor argued that the government was spending too much. The RBA's next meeting will be held on 7–8 December.
