TSMC Halts Steel Work Following Fatal Construction Accident in Kaohsiung

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) has halted structural steel work at its Kaohsiung construction site and at new construction sites across Taiwan after a fatal accident at Fab 22 in Nanzi District.

On October 20, 2026, four workers employed by a contractor fell from an elevated steel structure while carrying out steel lifting and installation work. All four later died from their injuries. The workers were employed by a contractor, not by TSMC directly.

The Southern Taiwan Science Park Bureau, which oversees labor inspections in the science park, said the exact cause remains under investigation. According to preliminary findings, the accident may have involved a broken bolt on a steel connection plate. Officials have not announced a final cause.
